Historically Geumjeongsan is a mountain defending our country. It is fortified with Geumjeongsanseong (Fortress), the largest fortress in the country, and Beomeosa (Temple), the representative guardian temple of the state.
With Godangbong (Peak, 801.5m above sea level), the main peak, as a center, it continues long from Janggunbong (Peak) to the north, via Sanggyebong (Peak) to the south up to Baegyangsan (Mt. 642m) at the back of Seongjigok (Valley). Among one another there are steep peaks such as Wonhyobong (Peak), Uisangbong (Peak), Mireukbong (Peak), Daeryukbong (Peak), Paryubong (Peak), Dongjebong (Peak) etc.
The physical aspect of the mountain is not so big but there are thick forests here and there and clear waters always spring out in every valley. Precipitous cliffs are exquisite because granite has been severely weathered. So it became a noted mountain Busan takes pride in. There are 14 mineral springs in Geumjeongsan. They quench the thirst of hikers, and used as drinking water for the residents of the region. It's the paradise for animals and plants where over 2300 kinds of trees and 600 animals inhabit. It also has tourist attractions all over such as Dongnae hot springs, Geumgang Park, Beomeosa (Temple), Gukcheongsa (Temple), Geumjeongsanseong (Fortress) and fort village etc.
There is a history of the name Geumjeongsan. According to a legend written in Dongguyeojiseungnam (ÔÔÏÐæ«ò¢ãÕÂ) and Dongnaebuji (ÔÔÕÑݤò¼), there was a stone about 3 jang (yards) high. It was always filled with water and didn't dry up even during the dry season, tinted with gold color. So a gold fish rode down on a cloud with 5 colors from the heaven, and played in the fountain. Thus it was called Geumjeongsan.
