Although it is a small mountain located in Mireuk-do (island), at the southwestern end of Tongyeong-si, it is well known to Buddhists as the base of Mireuk religion. Due to this reason, there are numerous temples of various sizes such as Yonghwasa (Temple), Gwaneumsa (Temple), Dosoram (Temple), and Miraesa (Temple). Also, the top of this mountain called Imhaebong (Peak) is also known for its historic worth as the beacon mound which was installed to protect the southern area. Mireuksan (Mt.) is connected with Tongyeong through the only underwater tunnel. Tongyeong is the most beautiful sea port of Korea and it is where general Chungmugong defeated Japanese pirates. This underwater tunnel is also known as Pandaegul. It was constructed by the Japanese during their occupation in our country but it is still used even its durability has come to an end, showing the Japanese technology at the time. Upon the top, large and small islands such as Bijindo (Island), Geojedo (Island), Hansando (Island), Chilcheondo (Island) come into view decorating Halleosudo like jewels.
Haepyeong Yeollyeo Gijeokbi (a monument dedicated to a chaste woman) standing in front of Yonghwasa (Temple) has a following legend. One day when there were strong wind and high waves, a young husband of a woman went out to fish and did not come back. The woman anxiously waiting for the husband took out a small boat, arrived at the place where her husband drowned and threw herself in. A few days later, the corpse of the woman embracing her dead husband came up to shore. The town people, upon looking at the great love between them, buried them together and raised this monument.
