Range
Baekdu Daegan Mountain System is the system to understand geography of our own country. It is the central mountain range starting from Baekdusan (Mt.) via Geumgangsan (Mt.), Seoraksan (Mt.), and finally reaching Jirisan (Mt.) in Korean peninsula. Its total length reaches up to 1,400km.
Different from mountain range system based on geological structures, it is the system to recognize mountains, where the flow of mountains can be understood on a basis of watershed on the surface of the earth. And it is harmonized with humankind and nature, considering the effect on formation of spheres of human life.

¡Ø 15 mountain ranges marked as 1 daegan (large system of mountains) 1 jeonggan (original system of mountains) 13 jeongmaek (original range of mountains) are the lifelines that supply water for 10 large rivers and the fences that mark them out.
The origin of Baekdu Daegan Mountain System, the spine of our country is closely related to sanctification of Baekdusan (Mt.) which is the holy mountain of our own nation.
Baekdusan (Mt.) has always been considered large, high, and holy mountain since the ancient myth of Dangun, and seems to have been worshipped since the birth myth of Wang Geon, the first king of the Goryeo dynasty. And, as the border along Dumangang (River) and Amnokgang (River) was confirmed during the reign of Sejong in the Joseon dynasty, it has truly and virtually become the mountain of our nation along with establishment of territorial awareness.
Later, beginning with [naemaek (following ranges) of Baekdusan (Mt.)] in Sejongsilok (The True Record of Reign of Sejong), one of the historical material published by the government, and terms like sanmaek (mountain ranges), jeongmaek (original ranges), daemaek (large ranges) in Joseonwangjosilok (The True Record of the Joseon Dynasty), finally the term, [Baekdu Daegan Mountain System], started to be declared in ancient maps and geographies such as Hamgyeongdojido (Maps), Seonghosaseol (a book of realism) of Yi Ik in 18th century.
